Multi-camera productions with camcorders?
I was wondering if there is such thing as a switcher for multi camcorder productions, Like the switchers in a control room (grass valley comes to mind, but don't think they sell switchers for cam corders)
I am thinking about a five camera (minimum) production .

camcorders of the consumer kind do not have genlock or SDI video output. canon makes only one model with genlock and SDI. Sony, JVC and Panasonic have camcorder (as opposed to studio cameras without recorder) models that are studio capable with genlock and SDI in their broadcast divisions. They are not cheap, expect to pay over $9000 each. Even broadcast division camcorders are not easily used in a studio because of their small physical size. They don't fit properly on pedestals nor do they work well with standard teleprompters. They are not made for multicore or triax, so you have to run separate cables for SDI out, genlock in, DC power, and intercom headsets. Generally studio cameras don't use internal mics. Studio camera lenses are designed for remote control of the zoom and focus functions (placed on the pedestal control handle), features not found on the standard camcorder lens. In the analog days, a few studios used Betacam camcorder models that could be setup in a studio configuration so that each camera could both record its own picture as well as provide picture for the studio mixer and program recorder. With genlock cameras, a five or more camera mix is easily done on a Thomson/Grass Valley switcher.
if you use consumer camcorders, without SDI you are limited to standard definition analog. without genlock you have to put an analog frame synchronizer on each switcher input. plus the same limitations stated for broadcast camcorders. Or you could use a Panasonic WJ-MX50A which has the sync built into the switcher, but that has 4 inputs maximum. These switchers were designed for A/B roll videotape editing suits, so most models are limited to 2 inputs. Either way, you will have to put a routing switcher ahead of the vision mixer to pre-select which cameras go to the available non-sync inputs. If you go this way, then you can use VHS camcorders because they have good camera heads even if the tape was trash, and many were designed for continuous video output.
