How To Use Infrared Illuminators For Low Or No Light Video Recording
It is often thought that night vision camcorder technology is only accessible to the armed forces or through the purchase of the latest high tech night vision equipment. Today, however, things are rapidly changing and many cameras and camcorders have excellent internal low light and infrared vision capacity.
The most common and least expensive method of capturing video or images in no or low light is by using infrared illuminators. One camcorder example is the Sony Night Shot video camera that first introduced this method over ten years ago.
The internal CCD recorder in many modern video cameras can record IR light. This enables the unit to record better quality video in low light situations. And on a number of units, an internal IR emitter is built into the camcorder to give better results when recording when there is low or no visible light.
For close up work or in low light interiors, these added IR light sources perform fairly well. Some find, however, that the camcorders don't do as well in very low light situations, such as shooting outdoors in the dark. There is a lack of a strong infrared light source to illuminate an outdoor scene using only the low powered internal IR light. But, by adding an add on IR illuminator, excellent night time footage can be taken.
Add on illuminators range from factory made units available from your camcorder manufacturer to very high powered add-ons from OEM sources. The standard add on lights are not high priced, and more powerful battery powered external light kits that allow adequate extra IR light in the 100 foot range can be found for a few hundred dollars.
By making use of an added IR illuminator of adequate power, it's possible to set up a useful night vision video camera without a huge cost outlay. The extra IR invisible light that you use can't be seen, but you can use the LCD panel on your camera and see what you're shooting in what will look like near daylight conditions. The use of additional infrared illumination really takes away the 'graininess' typically associated with no light video capture.
Try some experimenting in in the dark where only the camera can see. It will be surprising to find that your camera has more built in features than you thought.
