Avid Media Composer, Final Cut Pro, Premiere Pro?
I have recently installed avid media composer and I can't find out why it is so great and why it's first choice. I admit that I am an amateur (will eventually study editing) and that I am an ADOBE fan. However after googling and reading posts on dif forums I have decided to install avid. Now I am aware of its media management features (read about it haven't managed to test it in any way) and about how well it works with unity and mojo or nitris. What I am interested in is What makes it a better NLE than Pr pro or FCP? Can someone list the features a pro would use in a feature film or a more serious project so I can google it and find out more? Thank you for your time people. I look forward to reading your answers.
A professional doesn't care what tool is infront of them, they learn how to use the tool and get the most out of it. They just find ways to make the tool bend to their artistic needs. As long as its a professional tool, they find a way to get it done.
Avid was the first big NLE on the block, hence its reputation and "first choice" ranking. When it came out there was no Final Cut Pro, there was no Adobe Premiere PRo, there was no Media 100 (another one you might want to look into btw). It was like Microsoft, it had a monopoly, ran with it, and got everyone on board before other options even existed. So that means senior editors, those demanding the big dollars and big gigs, are all Avid users (some have since switched but not a tone). So the folks winning Oscars primarily use Avid, guess what the high end post houses are going to offer?
Is there anything to the software that makes it better? Sure, like you mentioned the media management. That is a really strong aspect to it, but its not perfect. The edit mode is really strong as well. But then it comes down to just how you like finesse an edit. You can accomplish the same with the other NLEs. But those trained in the Avid really like its approach to that. Basically Avid has a very "film editor" mentality to it. Its competition is more juvenile or I don't know, "tv editor" mentality? Its hard to describe. It doesn't make them bad choices, but the way they work is just different.
I personally prefer the speed ramp abilities of the Avid over all the other NLEs. But that's so not worth picking Avid over the other ones for. Its just one feature I wish the other ones would steal from Avid.
I'm not a fan of its effects mode but some people really like it. So that could be a reason its a better NLE potentially, but its a debatable point.
Avid's market share is changing though. More and more people have made the switch to Final Cut Pro. More and more Hollywood films and TV series are FCP based now. And indie markets are definitely big on FCP for its cost value. So Avid is far from the guaranteed first choice anymore. Its in a full on fight with FCP.
Premiere Pro is professional capable, but isn't professional considered. It took Adobe too long to get its act together with Premiere Pro. And it doesn't have quite the same hardware support/backing that Avid and FCP do. But as just a pure editor, it does work a lot like FCP, once you have the materials in it. What Premiere Pro has going for it isn't itself as an NLE, its all the applications it an speed so fluently with (ie Photoshop and After Effects). So depending on the project, that's where it can potentially be a great choice. Though again, Adobe dragged its heels so long, people are comfortable using those applications w/o Premiere Pro.
